The fastest way to log packaged foods

Tracking packaged and branded foods has never been easier. Simply point your camera at any UPC or EAN barcode, and our advanced scanner instantly retrieves complete nutritional information from a massive database of over 4.5 million foods. Perfect for grocery shopping, meal prep, and daily food logging.

Why Our Barcode Scanner Is Essential

Real-time automatic detection

The app automatically detects and scans barcodes the moment they're in frame—no button press needed. Supports EAN, UPC, and Code 128 formats with real-time camera barcode detection via the BarcodeScannerView. Hold steady for 1-2 seconds and the scan happens automatically.

Open Food Facts database

Heart Tracker fetches product data from Open Food Facts, a collaborative global database with millions of products from around the world. First scan requires internet, but the app intelligently caches results locally with OnlineSearchCache for lightning-fast offline access on repeat scans.

Product validation

After scanning, review the product validation screen (BarcodeScanningFlowView) showing name, brand, and full nutrition data. Verify it's the correct product before proceeding—important for multi-variant items like different flavors or sizes.

Flexible serving selection

Use the serving size picker to select exactly how much you ate. The app shows standard package servings but makes it easy to log partial containers, multiple servings, or custom amounts with instant nutrition calculation updates.

Scan history

Your most frequently scanned items appear in quick-access history. Perfect for foods you eat regularly - your favorite yogurt, protein bar, or breakfast cereal are always one tap away.

Works worldwide

Whether you're in North America, Europe, Asia, or beyond, our database includes international products. Traveling? The scanner recognizes local barcodes and provides nutrition data in multiple measurement systems.

How barcode scanning works

Tap the barcode icon

Open Heart Tracker and tap the barcode scanner icon in your food diary. Your camera will activate with a scanning frame overlay to help you align the barcode.

Point at barcode

Hold your phone steady and center the barcode within the scanning frame. You don't need to tap a button - the scanner automatically recognizes and reads the barcode when it's in focus.

Pro Tip:

For best results, scan in good lighting and hold your phone 4-6 inches from the barcode. The scanner works best when the barcode fills most of the scanning frame.

Instant results

Within 1-2 seconds, the food item appears with complete nutritional information: brand name, product name, serving size, and all nutrition facts. Review the details to make sure it matches your product variant.

Adjust & log

Adjust the serving size if needed (1 serving, 1.5 servings, 2 servings, etc.), then tap "Add to Diary". The food is instantly logged with accurate nutrition data based on the portion you consumed.

Perfect for every situation

Grocery Shopping:

Scan products while shopping to compare nutritional values. Check sodium levels in different soup brands, compare cholesterol in various snacks, or find the lowest-calorie option. Make informed decisions right in the store aisle.

Meal Prep:

Building meals for the week? Scan all packaged ingredients as you prep - pasta, sauce, cheese, canned beans, etc. Get accurate total nutrition for your meal prep containers by scanning every component.

Quick Snacks:

Grabbing a protein bar, yogurt, or packaged snack? Instead of typing the brand and searching, simply scan the barcode and log it in 3 seconds. Perfect for busy mornings or afternoon snacks.

Office Lunch:

Brought a frozen meal or packaged lunch to work? Scan it before heating and you'll have exact nutrition data without manually entering anything from the label.

Restaurant Packaged Items:

Many restaurants serve packaged sides, condiments, or beverages. Scan the barcode on that ketchup packet, salad dressing, or bottled drink for precise nutritional tracking.

Pro tips for perfect scans

Good lighting is key

Scan in well-lit areas for fastest recognition. If scanning in dim light, use your phone's flashlight feature to illuminate the barcode.

Hold steady

Keep your phone as still as possible for 1-2 seconds while scanning. Camera shake can prevent successful barcode recognition.

Try different angles

If a barcode won't scan, try slightly tilting your phone or rotating the product. Some barcodes scan better at certain angles.

Clean the barcode

Dirty or damaged barcodes may not scan. Wipe off any moisture, dirt, or debris from the barcode area before scanning.

Check product variants

After scanning, verify you got the right variant - especially for products with multiple flavors or sizes. The product name should exactly match your item.

Manual entry backup

If a barcode won't scan (damaged, missing, etc.), use the search feature to find the product manually or create a custom entry from the nutrition label.
