Custom Foods & Dishes

Can't find a food in the database? Create it. Cook the same meals every week? Save them as recipes. Log your favorites in one tap — no searching, no re-entering.

Build Your Food Library

Your personal food library

Heart Tracker's 4.5 million-item database covers the vast majority of foods you'll eat — but not everything. Local restaurants, family recipes, meal-prepped dishes, and specialty items all need a home. Custom Foods and Recipes give you unlimited space to build a food library that's entirely your own, with accurate nutrition you control.

Custom foods

Add any individual food item by entering its nutrition facts manually — perfect for items whose barcode isn't in the database, local grocery brands, or specialty ingredients. Once saved, it lives in your personal database forever.

Recipes

Combine multiple ingredients into a named recipe with automatic per-serving nutrition calculation. Save your weekly staples — smoothies, soups, salads, meal-prepped lunches — and log them instantly any time.

Creating a custom food

If you scan a barcode and the product isn't found, or you want to add a food that doesn't exist in the database, custom food entry takes less than a minute.

Open Custom Foods

Go to the Discover tab (books icon) and navigate to Custom Foods → Add Custom Food, or tap the option when a barcode scan returns no result.

Enter the food name and brand

Give the food a clear name — something you'll recognize when searching later. Include the brand name if it's a packaged product.

Enter nutrition from the label

Pull up the nutrition facts label and enter the values per serving. Heart Tracker tracks: calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, sodium, potassium, total carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, and protein. Enter what's on the label — skip fields that aren't listed.

Set the serving size

Define the serving unit (grams, ounces, cups, pieces, etc.) and the standard serving size. This determines how portion adjustments scale when you log the food.

Save and log

Save the food to your personal database. It's now searchable by name any time you log a meal, and you can adjust the portion size at logging time just like any other food.

Great candidates for custom foods:

• A local bakery's whole grain bread
• A specialty protein powder or supplement
• A regional grocery store brand not in the database
• An imported or ethnic specialty ingredient
• A homemade condiment or sauce with known nutrition

Creating recipes

A recipe is a collection of ingredients with automatic per-serving nutrition. Build it once, log it forever. No re-entering ingredients, no manual addition — just tap and log.

Open the Recipes section

Go to the Discover tab and tap Recipes → Create New Recipe, or tap the "+" button in the Recipes section.

Name and describe your recipe

Enter a name (e.g., "My Morning Smoothie" or "Sunday Chicken Soup") and an optional description. Choose a category — Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Salad, Soup, Smoothie, or Snack — so it's easy to find later.

Add ingredients

Search the food database for each ingredient and specify the quantity and serving type (grams, cups, tablespoons, pieces). The same 4.5 million-item database is available here. You can also use other custom foods you've already saved as ingredients in a recipe.

Set the number of servings

Tell the app how many servings the recipe makes. Heart Tracker divides the total nutrition by that number to calculate nutrition per serving. If you change the serving count later, the per-serving numbers update automatically.

Add optional details

Optionally add prep time, cook time, step-by-step cooking instructions, and tags like Vegetarian, Quick, Low-Carb, or Heart-Healthy. Add a photo to make it easy to recognize in your library. Mark as a favorite for quick access.

Save — nutrition is calculated automatically

Heart Tracker totals all ingredients and divides by servings to give you accurate per-serving nutrition: calories, all macros, saturated fat, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, and more. No calculator needed.

Logging a saved recipe or custom food

Once saved, your recipes and custom foods log just as fast as any food in the main database.

Search by name

From any meal log screen, search for your recipe or custom food by name. Your personal items appear in results alongside the main database — clearly labeled so you can tell them apart.

One-tap for favorites

Mark your most-used recipes and foods as favorites. They surface at the top of your recent items so you can add them without typing anything. Great for breakfast staples and weekly meal-prep lunches.

Copy previous meals

If you eat the same breakfast every morning, use the Copy Meal feature to duplicate yesterday's entry instead of searching again. One tap re-logs the entire meal exactly as it was.

Adjust portions at logging time

When you log a recipe or custom food, you can always adjust the portion size. Log 0.5 servings if you had a smaller portion, or 1.5 servings if you went back for more — nutrition scales automatically.

Editing recipes and sharing with family

Edit any time

Changed the recipe? Updated the ingredients? Edit the recipe and all future logs will use the updated nutrition. Past logs stay unchanged to preserve the accuracy of your historical data.

Share via AirDrop, Messages, or Mail

Export any recipe and share it with family members or friends via AirDrop, Messages, Mail, or any other sharing method on your iPhone. The recipient can import it directly into their own Heart Tracker app — no account required, no server involved. Perfect for families managing heart health together.

Best candidates for recipes:

• Morning smoothies and protein shakes you make weekly
• Family recipes you cook on rotation
• Meal-prep items portioned for the week (overnight oats, grain bowls)
• Salads where you always use the same base ingredients
• Homemade soups and stews
• Post-workout meals you eat consistently

Full nutrition tracked per serving

Custom foods and recipes track the same complete nutrition data as everything else in the database:

  • Calories
  • Total fat
  • Saturated fat
  • Trans fat
  • Cholesterol
  • Sodium
  • Total carbohydrates
  • Dietary fiber
  • Sugars
  • Protein
  • Potassium
  • Vitamins & minerals

All nutrition data from custom foods and recipes is written to Apple Health along with your other meal logs — keeping your complete health record in one place.

Stop searching for the same foods twice

Build your personal food library and log what you actually eat — not just what the database happens to have.
