The fastest way to log your meals

Tired of typing food names and searching through databases? With Voice Entry, you describe what you ate naturally and the app calculates calories, macros, and nutrition automatically. Speak for 30 seconds instead of typing for 5 minutes. Perfect for tracking your diet, managing your weight, or watching cholesterol.

Why Voice Entry Works

Much faster than typing

Speaking is 3-5x faster than typing. The app understands entire meals at once, so you save even more time. What took 5 minutes now takes 30 seconds.

Apple Intelligence powered

No need to learn special commands or formats. Speak naturally: "I had scrambled eggs with cheese, two slices of whole wheat toast, and a cup of orange juice." Heart Tracker uses Apple Intelligence (iOS 18.1+) with real-time transcription via SFSpeechRecognizer to understand context, portions, and preparation methods.

Automatic food matching

Apple Intelligence extracts individual food items, estimates quantities, and classifies meal type (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner/Snack). Foods are matched against the 4.5 million-item database with color-coded confidence badges—green for high confidence (85%+), yellow for medium (70-84%), and orange for low (<70%).

Review and refine

See all matched foods with confidence scores. Tap any item to adjust portions or select from alternative suggestions. Unmatched or low-confidence foods can be corrected with a single tap.

Hands-free logging

Perfect for logging while cooking, eating, or on the go. Keep your hands clean and your phone untouched.

How AI voice entry works

Tap the microphone

From the Home tab, tap the microphone icon button. Grant microphone permission if this is your first time. The app begins listening immediately.

Speak naturally

Describe your meal conversationally. The app uses real-time speech recognition, so you'll see your words appear as you speak. Include quantities, cooking methods, and brands for best results.

Example:

"I had two scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, two slices of buttered whole wheat toast, a banana, and a large coffee with milk and sugar."

AI processes with @Generable models

Apple Intelligence analyzes your description and extracts individual food items with estimated serving sizes (0.25-5.0 range). It automatically classifies the meal type and estimates quantities from phrases like "two eggs" or "a cup of".

Review color-coded matches

Each food appears with a confidence badge: green (85%+ match), yellow (70-84%), or orange (<70% or unmatched). Tap any item to adjust portions, swap for a different food, or remove it. Confirm when ready!

Real-World Examples

Quick Snack:

"Apple with two tablespoons of peanut butter"

✓ Identifies: apple, peanut butter (2 tbsp)

Understanding food context

Voice Entry goes beyond simple speech-to-text. It understands food context:

Portion recognition

Understands phrases like "two eggs", "a bowl of", "1 cup", "medium apple", "handful of nuts" and converts them to serving estimates on a 0.25-5.0 scale for accurate nutrition calculation.

Cooking methods

Differentiates between "fried", "baked", "grilled", "scrambled", "steamed" and matches foods with appropriate preparation-specific nutritional values from the database.

Real-time transcription

Uses SFSpeechRecognizer for live speech-to-text, so you can see your words appear as you speak and know the AI is processing your description.

Brand recognition

Mentions of "Chobani yogurt", "Starbucks latte", or "Chipotle burrito" are matched to specific branded products for maximum accuracy.

Multi-food extraction

Processes entire complex meals in a single utterance—the @Generable model extracts each individual food item with its own quantity and serving estimate.

Meal type classification

Automatically determines if your meal is Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or a Snack based on the foods mentioned and time of day context.

System Requirements

  • iOS 18.1 or later for full AI voice capabilities
  • Apple Intelligence enabled (supported on iPhone 15 Pro and later)
  • Internet connection for food database access
  • Works on iPhone and iPad

Note: Basic voice dictation works on iOS 17.0+, but AI-powered natural language understanding requires iOS 18.1+ with Apple Intelligence.

Pro tips for best results

Be specific about portions

Instead of "some chicken", say "4 ounces of grilled chicken" or "one chicken breast".

Mention cooking methods

Add "grilled", "fried", "baked", or "steamed" to get more accurate calorie counts.

Include condiments

Don't forget to mention butter, oil, dressing, or sauces - they add up!

Speak clearly

In a quiet environment, speak at a normal pace. No need to shout or talk slowly.

Review before saving

Always quickly review the identified items. You can adjust quantities with a tap.
